Jakarta. Authorities in Jakarta have issued a flood warning for Indonesia’s capital with floodwaters expected to strike parts of the city in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Tarjuki, an official from the Public Works Agency, said water levels at the Katulampa floodgate in Bogor, West Java, had reached 110 centimeters at 3:30 p.m. and were heading toward Jakarta.

He said the water would reach Depok at 6 p.m. and Jakarta at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Tarjuki said nine areas were expected to be inundated in floodwaters 50 centimeters to 1.5 meters deep, namely Kampung Melayu, Rawa Jati, Bukit Duri, Kampung Pulo, Bidara Cina and Gang Arus in East Jakarta, and Pangadegan, Kebun Baru and Kampung Poncol in South Jakarta.

Hendri, another official from the Public Works Agency, said residents lining or living near the Ciliwung River — one of the world’s most polluted rivers — were most likely to be affected.

Paimin Napitupulu, chief of Jakarta’s Fire and Disaster Mitigation Agency, said it was ready to provide assistance to flood victims.

“I urge people to be careful and prepare themselves by securing important documents and valuable objects,” he said.
