A leaking canister containing liquefied petroleum gas caused the explosion that rocked the Apotek Medistra pharmacy in Yogyakarta, police said after conducting a preliminary investigation into Thursday’s blast.
“Gas leaked out of the 12-kilogram canister, then a spark coming from the refrigerator cable set off the explosion,” said Adjutant Comr. Sudarmanto, deputy chief of the Yogyakarta Police. He added that the police were dismissing the possibility that a bomb or a chemical substance caused the explosion.
Three passing motorcyclists suffered minor injuries as a result of the blast. The shop’s glass windows were shattered and the rolling door was heavily damaged.
Police interrogated 12 witnesses but no one was considered a suspect.
