So all this rubbish that we hear that Indonesia is not a Muslim country, is just that...rubbish.

Dear JG readers, many comments here debate if God indeed exist or not. I would like to share an illustration which we could think about: when we were born, our parents have a choice to love us or to abandon us. When we grow up, we have a choice to be thankful to our parents and love them or we can also choose not to acknowledge them as our parents. We are given choices and have many decisions to make in our lifetime. We can choose not to believe that God exist, but the Lord our God is faithful by nature and HE will not abandon us. HIS promise in 2 Timothy: If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. HE even knows the number of hair on your head. We can choose to believe HIM or not, it is our choice to make. But, when you have hardened your heart and decided not to believe, even if someone who has died and rose up to tell you there is God, you will still not believe. Give yourself a chance, sincerely and humbly pray that HE may reveal Himself in your life in the next 7 days. I believe HE will.

This is beyond stupid. I find it so amazing and terrifying at the same time that people can mob up at an instant. I guess the repression of that smothers this nation fuels such Neanderthal action.

If anything, it should be the government officials that need to be fired and taken to jail. Where is the logic in this? They behaved like cowardly bullies. We condemn bullying at school but this is far worse as it involves people whom we trust to do public service. Which does not include beating anyone up.

The reaction of the head of the Sumatra chapter of MUI speaks volumes for the so called religious intellectuals. If someone disagrees which your religious beliefs, beating him up and taking away his livelihood doesn't seem like a good way to convince him that God is all merciful.

Apparently, we are back to burning witches at the stake.

Many tribes in Papua follow animism believing in spiritual values and the occult. In maintining their association with animism, they do not accept the concept of god , and are therefore technically aethiests. Does this mean the Indonesian state can now imprison this segment of the papuan community for merely following their traditional beliefs ??

Surely any law requiring an indonesian citizen to subscribe to a particular religious belief - such as believing in god - is a serious breach of the country's obligations to mainatining human rights. In this case the right NOT to belive in a supreme being. No I dont mean SBY, I mean God whoever she is !!

human rights - particularly in relation to traditional papuan beliefs.

An Indonesian civil servant who posted “God does not exist” on his Facebook page has been taken into police custody for his own protection after he was badly beaten.

The man, identified as Alexander, 31, now faces the prospect of losing his job, or even being jailed, if he fails to repent and accept one of six official state religions.

Blasphemy carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

Local media reported that when Alexander arrived at work at the Dharmasraya Development Planning Board (Bappeda) on Wednesday, a group of men, also understood to comprise government officials, attacked and beat him before police arrived and took him into protective custody.

Dharmasraya Police Chief Sr. Comr. Chairul Aziz told the Jakarta Globe that Alexander moderated a Facebook account titled “Ateis Minang” (Minang Atheists) and had written an update that “God does not exist.”

Chairul said he could not confirm the reports that Alexander was attacked but say that he had taken into protective custody to “anticipate anarchy.”

“Besides, he is also afraid of being intimidated or hurt.”

Alexander was quoted by Padangekspres.co.id as saying that he did not believe in God because of the amount of crime and disasters.

“If God indeed exists, why do bad things happen,” he was quoted as saying. “There should only be good things if God is merciful.”

Alexander said he was born a Muslim but ceased religious activities in 2008.

“I have no idea what the problem is. When I arrived at the office, a mob came and beat me, and took me to the police.”

Aziz said police would wait for a recommendation from the West Sumatra Coordinating Agency to Supervise Religion and Beliefs (Bakorpakem) as well as the Ministry of Religious Affairs before deciding on further action against Alexander.

“If they consider what he did was blasphemy, we will charge him.”

Gusrizal Gazahar, head of the West Sumatera chapter of the Council of Ulema (MUI), told local media that if he refused to repent, Alexander should lose his job.

“I want him to be fired,” he said.
