Banyuwangi, East Java. Abdullah Azwar Anaz and his running mate Yusuf Widyatmoko look set to cruise to victory in the election for district head of Banyuwangi, East Java, after the incumbent was disqualified from running.

The latest results from Wednesday’s election give the pair — nominated by the Golkar Party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the National Awakening Party (PKB) and the National Ulema Awakening Party (PKNU) — almost 51 percent of votes.

Incumbent district head Ratna Ani Lestari and her running mate, Pebdi Arisdiawan, were dropped from the race after Golkar abandoned them and left them with insufficient party support to proceed.

Golkar dumped the pair after Pebdi, who until Wednesday was the party’s district chairman, repeatedly insisted he should be the main draw on the ticket.

The party announced his dismissal on polling day, but said the decision was made on July 9. It cited Pebdi’s insubordination as the main reason for the move, and said it had ordered the Banyuwangi branch to elect a new chairman within 30 days.

Pebdi was formally warned by the party three times for insisting he should be the candidate for district head, and not the deputy. In the end, the party shifted its support to Abdullah and Yusuf.
