so he has been arrested and detained. We are told almost every day that no Indonesian should be detained unless their crime carries a 5 year or more sentence - hence why so many politicians and officials dont get detained - therefore why are we seeing such an abundance of such cases???

A South Sulawesi grandfather was sentenced to two month and 25 days in jail on Thursday for the theft of a bucket of pepper, but he will likely be released due to time served already.

Rawi, 66, was found guilty of stealing ground pepper worth about Rp 100,000 ($11) from his neighbor Abbas in Sengkeng village. The two men are reportedly related.

Rawi’s lawyer, Alamsyah, has protested the verdict, saying that there was no theft and that Abbas had no interest in seeing his neighbor prosecuted.

“The trial is absolutely unnecessary because the owner of the ground pepper [Abbas] did not experience any loss ... he has made an official letter explaining that he does not feel disadvantaged,” Alamsyah said.

Reading the verdict on Thursday, Judge Raden Nurhayati said that if Rawi accepted the judgement, he would be free to go due to time already spent in custody.

“It depends on [Rawi] whether to accept it or not,” Alamsyah said. “If he accepts it, he can then be free after completing the administration process.”

Previously, Rawi’s son-in-law described the 66-year-old as a harmless old man.

“My father-in-law has poor hearing and his health is also declining,” Abdul said. “He is an illiterate farmer, he does not understand why he is being prosecuted.”

“We are disappointed with the action taken by law enforcement. This case should not have proceeded to court, because the pepper’s owner didn’t feel bothered in the first place,” Abdul said.
