Denpasar. A Greek man could receive a death sentence on charges that he attempted to smuggle large amounts of crystal methamphetamine into the country.

Prosecutor Ketut Sujaya told the Denpasar District Court during a pretrial hearing on Thursday that Nikolaos Bouikidis, 36, deserved the harshest penalty because of the amount of drugs he attempted to bring into the country.

He was arrested with 4.2 kilograms of methamphetamine.

“The street value for that amount of meth is about Rp 10.5 billion [$1.2 million],” Ketut said. He added that he believed Bouikidis was working for a syndicate operating out of Turkey.

He said the suspect had admitted to being a courier, and had been paid $5,000 and given a plane ticket back home to be used once the drugs were delivered.

The suspect was detained by customs officials when he arrived at Ngurah Rai International Airport on Oct. 3. When his luggage was scanned, officers spotted the drugs stashed in the lining of a suitcase.

Bouikidis, who is a bus driver in Greece, said the man who ordered the drugs to be delivered to Jakarta was called “Mr. Cameron.”

Police say that shortly after Bouikidis was arrested they brought him to Jakarta to set up a sting operation targeting the leaders of the drug ring, but Bouikidis had attempted to flee.

Bouikidis ’s lawyer, Daniar Tri Sasongko, said he would not make a pretrial motion to have the charges dismissed.

The presiding judge, Parulian Saragih, set the opening trial date for Feb. 7.
