OK The backstage news on this

No deal has been struck on back tax issues... The existing companies dealing with MPA are still out in the cold waiting on tax appeals - they argue the rule changes cannot be applied retrospectively... Well if we look at Ariel they obviously can.. We shall see, meanwhile OMEGA owned by.... is pushing the others with govt support?? out of business

Omega (OWNED BY???) will have limited rights to import selective movies on a movie by movie basis

The new flat rate customs regime means a significant loss in tax revenue - Why? There are less movies coming therefore instant loss in AV revenues, Instant loss im 42C/m revenues, instant loss on PPN - best estimate is about 1/2 to 1/3rd loss in overall tax revenues. Of course in the short term we will see massive returns as our folk flock back... DONT BE FOOLED

MPA will not set up a rep office here

Ticket prices - This is NOT an MPA requirement but a cinema response to reductions in revenues - possibly instigated by the govt?? Well perhaps if we knew who owned OMEGA that might be more apparant

End of the month is possible but who can guess with the lies and claims already being spun - however it is clear that only the very biggest earners (5 or 6 movies) per year will be screened since the MPA will only allow profitable movies - net result? Harry Potter still showing to empty cinemas next February?? Yes probably. plus loss of jobs and TAx reveneues

Plus a new influx of those wonderful Asean movies -- Oh BTW a suggestion that we will start to see Bollywood movies by the bucket load - as a tax free deal seems to be in the offering as a sweetner to Tata (who also own significant chunks of Bollywood production) Result? Well Im sure the FPI and PB will have a great time making hand shandies as the ladies dance - but the reveunes will suffer again

No news on the new support for the local industry BTW

Final word - has anyone noticed anything Jero touches gets brown and sticky

7 wonders update - Komodo is in 28th place in the voting - out of 28 Finalists - The legal case brought by Jero v 7 Wonders never materialised BTW on the advice of the lawyer representing Naz...

I notice that the particular gent often represents the govt and people who are v the govt like Naz ... Is there a conflict of interests there?? Of course not lawyers like lawmakers have a code of conduct

The final “Harry Potter” installment, “Transformers 3” and “Kung Fu Panda 2” will all be released in Indonesia before the end of the month, Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said on Thursday.

But it appears that it is not all good news for Indonesian movie lovers.

Jero indicated the dispute with Hollywood had not been completely resolved and that ticket prices were likely to rise.

“Three movies are now being censored at the Film Censorship Board [LSF] and if everything is OK then they should be released before [Ramadan],” he said.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) did not respond to e-mails on Thursday seeking comment on the minister’s statement.

Jero said that even though the movies would be screened, it did not mean the tax dispute had been resolved.

Asked about a potential increase in ticket prices, he said the ministry would not impose a price hike limit. He urged movie theaters to avoid extreme increases.

“Because the movies that will be shown are top movies, if there is a price increase, it should only be a small one,” Jero said.

Muklis Paimi, the head of the LSF, confirmed that three Hollywood films were being considered by the board.

“‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2,’ ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ and ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ are being censored,” he said on Thursday. “Hopefully, we will have finished this by tonight [Thursday evening.]”

Djonny Sjafruddin, head of the Indonesian Cinema Companies Union (GPBSI), previously said that only technical issues, such as consideration by censors and the adding of subtitles, remained between Hollywood blockbusters and Indonesian screens.

Last month, a new tax regime for foreign films was agreed on in response to demands by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) to charge studios more to screen films in Indonesian cinemas.

“We hope that there will be no more boycotts like this,” Djonny said.

Djonny said local cinemas would also screen several Hollywood blockbusters that Indonesia had missed during the five-month boycott.

Since the studios began boycotting the country, Indonesian movie lovers have missed out on dozens of films, among them “Black Swan,” “True Grit” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

The MPA represents US studios including Warner Brothers, Universal Studios and Twentieth Century Fox.
