One wonders how many die each year on the roads as a result of people driving while sending sms' from their handphones, talking on phones or under the wheels of trucks driven by unqualified, inexperienced frontal lobotomy cases. My cynical prediction is that this women is "connected" and will end up being referred to a drug treatment facility rather than serving a meaningful jail term, just as soon as the case starts to fade from the news

it's insane to read something like this after what happened to Alexander Aan.

Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Untung S. Rajab said on Friday that people should stop condemning Afriani, insisting she had realized her mistake and was willing to bear the consequences.

“Do not blow up this matter. Do not continuously provoke people. Have pity on her and her family. Just leave everything to the investigators. We are now processing this,” Untung said. "

You've gotta be kidding. Have pity on her.

How about have pity on the kid who stole the sandal?

Pity on the old woman who stole meatballs, or a bowl, or a spoon?

Pity on the man who spoke his mind on a Facebook page? This woman might only face up to six years of jail, while Mr. Aan could face five.

the injustice is nauseating.

Yohanes-Sulaiman:

"Keep in mind that this lady has neither stolen any pair of sandals nor dressed as a punk, so of course the police has to be lenient."

I'll add one more to that:

nor declared herself to be an atheist!

Dez....

I think you got me all wrong about my remark ..."mixed feelings". I was trying to express my concern on why she was getting the attention via the media and the police too!

Without any doubt she was reckless/irresponsible and deserves the punishment when found guilty.

Don't tell me that you have not wondered why the media and police are giving this incident their attention? I was not attempting to blow it up and the examples were primarily meant to support.

Dez...death has lost its sting.

The Jakarta Police are calling for an end to public attacks on Afriani Susanti, the driver who caused the deaths of nine pedestrians last month, and asking for faith in the judicial process.

He said that Afriani had already had to face social punishment for her actions and that the public should let the police handle the case.

“Just trust the legal process. She is also a human being with rights,” he said.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said Afriani continued to undergo a series of psychological tests that he said could last for another three days.

He also said that in general, Afriani’s mental condition was still stable and added that her dossier and those of her three friends who had been in the car she was driving when the accident took place were now complete. The four are accused of using drugs.

Tests have found them to have been under the influence of drugs when the accident occurred.

Abdul Hakim, a lawmaker from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), said Afriani could face up to 12 years in jail and fines of up to Rp 24 million ($2,700) for negligence leading to death under the 2009 Traffic Law.

He said that the intentional factor of driving in a drunken state at high speed was enough to push for a charge of negligence leading to death.

He demanded that police charge her of violating Article 311 of the law, which stresses that the deed was done intentionally.

Police had said that they were planning to charge Afriani with violating Article 310 of the same law (negligence leading to death), which only carries up to six years in jail.

“From the site of the accident and the police investigation, the element of intentionality in driving a vehicle while in a condition that could endanger others is proven,” the legislator said. “She obstinately wanted to drive although she was drunk and even though she had been advised to take a taxi, and she drove at a speed of more than 89.24 kilometers per hour on a road where speed is limited to 60 to 70 kilometers an hour.”

Police said the four suspects had admitted to drinking and consuming ecstasy pills prior to the accident and lacked sleep prior to the crash on Jan. 22.

Afriani also did not have a valid driver’s license or proper car registration documents.
