The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency forecast on
Wednesday that heavy rain would fall nationwide in December.
“All
regions will experience heavy rains in December but the heaviest
rainfall is predicted to fall in January and February,” said Widada
Sulistya, the director of the Center of Public Meteorology.
Sulistya
said the heaviest of the rainfall would be experienced in most parts of
Java, Sumatra, southern Kalimantan, northern Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara,
Maluku and Papua. In anticipation of flooding, the agency has been
cooperating with institutions such as the National Disaster Management
Agency (BNPB) and the Health Ministry’s Crisis Center.
“We
have distributed data about the rainfall’s intensity to all places in
the country so that they can anticipate the floods,” he said. He added
that people should also be mindful of high waves in coastal areas
during the rainy season.
“Wind movements and the rainy season
also contribute to high waves, in some cases more than four meters.” He
said the high waves will be more frequent in the waters off southern
Java, southern Bali, western Sumatra, the western part of Kalimantan,
Papua, Maluku and Sulawesi.
