The first lady, Ani Yudhoyono, is being treated in the hospital after contracting typhoid, a member of the presidential team of doctors said on Thursday.

Ani was admitted to the Army hospital in Jakarta on Tuesday and was diagnosed as suffering from a bout of typhoid, said Aris Wibudi, a member of the presidential medical team.

“Currently, the first lady is still suffering from a fever that comes and goes, but clinically she is showing improvements,” Aris said at the hospital.

He did not say how Ani contracted typhoid. He also declined to say when the first lady might be released from the hospital.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono , who had been on a visit to Cilacap, Central Java, on Wednesday, arrived back in the capital on Thursday and visited his wife at Gatot Subroto Hospital, according to state news agency Antara.

The president arrived accompanied by members of the presidential guard at about 9:30 a.m., witnesses said. They added that he went straight to the fourth floor where the first lady is being treated.

Leaving four hours later, a smiling Yudhoyono told journalists that “her condition is improving. Please pray for her.”

Among the dignitaries and family members visiting the first lady at the hospital were State Secretary Sudi Silalahi and in-law Aulia Pohan and his wife.

A presidential spokesman said on Wednesday that doctors had advised the first lady to take “two or three days of bed rest.”

Ani’s hospitalization only became known after Yudhoyono announced it himself on Tuesday, just a few hours after his wife had been admitted.

“Ibu Ani is not able to celebrate Christmas with us because right now she is being treated at the hospital,” Yudhoyono said while delivering the opening speech at the national Christmas celebration at the Jakarta Convention Center.
