The Jakarta administration said on Monday that an estimated 38,000 sacrificial goats, sheeps and cattle would be needed for the Islamic holiday of Idul Adha early next month.

Ipih Ruyani, head of the city’s maritime affairs and fisheries agency, said most of the animals would have to be brought in from outside Jakarta, but added that stringent health checks would be in place.

Idul Adha, which falls on Nov. 6 this year, is known as the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, when Muslims who can afford to do so buy a goat, sheep or cow for slaughter. JG

Indonesia Donates $3.1m to Asean Relief

The Indonesian government has donated $3.1 million toward disaster mitigation efforts by other Southeast Asian countries, an official said on Monday.

The main beneficiaries were Thailand, which received $1 million, and Vietnam ($500,000). Burma, Cambodia, Laos and the Philippines each got $400,000.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said the gesture was meant not only to help in humanitarian efforts in those countries, but also as a way of improving relations between Jakarta and other Asean governments.
