Jakarta. Indonesians, while still struggling to comprehend the twin disasters that struck the country this week, mobilized on Wednesday to respond to the needs of the thousands of victims.
Prominent blogger Wicaksono tweeted calls for donations and set up a collection center for those wanting to donate supplies.
He said the drive was initiated by the Komunitas Langsat blogger community and that a Web site for the cause was expected to be up and running today.
A donation box will also be made available at Pesta Blogger 2010 on Saturday. Used goods and clothing received will be resold to raise funds.
Animals left abandoned or stranded in villages affected by the eruption of Mount Merapi also have a savior in the Jakarta Animal Aid Network.
JAAN’s Pramudya Harzani said they were looking for volunteers to help relocate animals in the area and that a team of nine volunteers, including two veterinarians, left late on Wednesday for Yogyakarta.
“We are looking to save the wild animals there such as primates and also the domesticated ones.”
Trisnia Anchali Kardia launched a fund-raising effort through Twitter with some 50 of her friends. “We realized we needed to do something even though we couldn’t go to the disaster locations,” she said.
Messages of support also poured in from abroad. US President Barack Obama expressed his condolences, while Hollywood actors like Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp sympathized through Twitter.
