Blightyboy, you live in Bali as do I. I use Aha (mobile) for internet at the moment. I have had consistent 2.3 mps for the first month. After that toss the card buy a new one reregister again and away you go. It's been consistently the best I have ever had including a direct military sat link in Iraq. Either that or Speedy. Speedy worked like a charm in Sanur. However the point you were making is well taken. Just thought the internet tip might help. Surprised me.

For Nuclear power. I am a huge supporter and will defend it on any technical level you wish. However I do not wish to enter the fray here as it is like Football and Rugby.... you either support it or don't and trying to convince otherwise is pointless.

I do not however support nuclear power in Indonesia at present but for a different set of reasons. Waste disposal is now so efficient that it is not worth discussing, believe it or not. It is the least of the problems. However what is a problem is the political and social aspects of the country at present in a fledgling democracy. If Indonesia were to join the nuclear club what is to stop them from developing nuclear weapons. Now that is something to really worry about with the level of politicians we have today. Even more unimaginable, with fissionable material in the country or even the waste being sequestered here, what nightmares would we have if people like Bashir managed to access enough for a dirty bomb? These are much more important reasons for the country not to get involved in nuclear power at this stage in my mind.

I have seen the effects of depleted Uranium in Fallujah and other places and do not want to see it again. Never mind a full blown nuclear weapon or the worst of the worst a dirty bomb.

The the number of radicals currently in the country I do not think we are ready for it.

Safe as it is despite Japan's current problem, look it up, their program has been a dog from the start, I believe Indonesia has too fragile a political and social situation at present to add nuclear power to the equation.

Staff from the State Electricity Company are ready are they? Well instead of just sitting around, come round and mend the bloody electric cables on my complex that have been hanging down to the ground for several years, despite many warnings to them about the dangers of electrocution, especially for kids.

“We have many experts who have been prepared [for a nuclear power plant] for decades." DECADES?????

So Batam has had experts in Nuclear power for years, all just sitting around waiting for the nod to go of a built a nuclear facility and start supplying power? Absolute, total, complete and utter cobblers!

"Ferhat said the project would not go ahead anytime soon because there were so many factiors to take into consideration — such as the environment, climate, geology and geography and including finding a location not prone to tsunamis, volcanic eruptions or earthquakes." OK, so they are ready, they have the people, fully trained and the research is no problem, but they have not found a location and have no idea about the effect of tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, or climate.

Ferhat Aziz is talking a load of crap. I am very sure his interest is to be allocated funds by the government for studies, that will of course make him and his partners very rich.

Have a good weekend!

@cessch: - I am no fan of Nuclear either, but do-not forget that if we continue along the same path as now, using fossil fuels to generate power, the Earth and mankind along with it are also doomed.

@foto4mike THAT is exactly the crux of the matter. How can you possibly trust any plant to be safely built unless of course you force all the politicians and engineers who had any hand in it to live right next door. even then i suspect some of them would be short sighted enough to pocket the money and go ahead with lower quality materials. It is truly a disaster in the making.

why would anyone think it would be handled differently than anything else here in Indonesia ?

The Nuclear Energy Agency [Batan] says Indonesia has the expertise required to build and maintain a nuclear power plant in the country.

“Batan has sufficient human resources to support the development of a nuclear power plant,” Batan spokesman Ferhat Aziz said on Friday.

He said that staff from the State Electricity Company and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources would also be employed to work on the project.

“We have many experts who have been prepared [for a nuclear power plant] for decades. If you  compare Indonesia to Korea, Vietnam and Malaysia, we are more than ready to ‘go nuclear’,” Ferhat said.

Batan’s responsibilities are limited to training and research, therefore, the agency must wait for the government to put the plans to work.

Ferhat said the project would not go ahead anytime soon because there were so many factiors to take into consideation — such as the environment, climat, geology and geography and including finding a location not prone to tsunamis, volcanic eruptions or earthquakes.

“In Indonesia, there are many places suitable for a nuclear plant, such as Kalimantan, Bangka and the northern Java coast. Those places are relatively safe from tsunami, volcanoes and earthquakes,” he said.
