A 13-year-old boy in Gowa, South Sulawesi, could face up to two months in jail for stealing 2 kilograms of scrap metal, adding to the list of cases of juveniles prosecuted for petty crimes.

The boy was indicted at the Gowa District Court, where his mother, Sugiarti, argued that the case should have been settled out of court.

Instead, the boy was detained by police, cutting off his access to education. Prosecutors said the victim, Haris, insisted the boy be tried in court.

Haris, a resident of Bontorea village, said the boy, D.A., stole scrap metal from his yard on Dec. 7.

The court promised that the trial would be swift and conducted behind close doors to protect the boy’s interests and rights as a minor.
