Indonesia has found itself in a familiar position in its latest territorial dispute with Malaysia — it has no official data to back up its claim.

Taufik Kiemas, speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), said on Thursday that even though Indonesia would vigorously defend its claim in Camar Bulan, a region in West Kalimantan, Malaysia had a more complete set of data to back up its stance.

“It is better for us to negotiate [with Malaysia],” Taufiek said. “If we take it to court, we'll lose again.”

Indonesia is still smarting from a decision by the International Court of Justice to award Sipadan and Ligitan islands to Malaysia.

Indonesia and Malaysia are also involved in a feud over islands in the oil-rich Ambalat chain.
