Police are struggling to find a motive after an officer in Banyuwangi, East Java, committed suicide on Wednesday by shooting himself in the head.

Brig. Gen. Muhammad Taufik, a National Police spokesman, said on Thursday that the incident occurred at the Tanjungwangi subprecinct police station at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

He said the victim, First Brig. Dody Setiawan, was on duty with a colleague at the time when he received a call on his cellphone. He moved to an adjacent room to take the call and a shot was heard soon after.

The colleague rushed to the room to find Dody had shot himself in the head with a handgun he had taken from the station’s gun rack. Police are trying to identify the caller as they look for a motive for the apparent suicide.
