370657Greetings forum users, two things.
First, you don’t need to post your comments multiple times. The reason that it is not appearing immediately is because the comments have to first be vetted by the Web editor before they can be posted — or deleted.
I realize this is not the most ideal situation given that it can be as long as 12 hours between updates, so thank you for your understanding.
Second, personal attacks will not be tolerated. Please try and stick to the topics.
Anyway, many thanks to all participants involved in these often lively debates and I hope you all have nice weekends.
Cheers.
Well ChrisH... at least you do make several valid points. I'll give you credit for that most of what you write is a matter of opinion. Whether a news channel is "good" or "bad" is an opinion. One mans "terrorist" is another mans "hero"... that is an opinion. Whether the U.S. is a "Great Nation" or the "Great Satan" is a matter of opinion. The world and it's populace see what they want to see.... A point I have tried to convey to Simon P. He seems to see only the worst of the U.S.
Simon P. writes... "This is also not a question of hatred, just objective reality." Very funny! Your reality is not objective. Just the opposite. It is filled with venom. Obviously asking you to "Man Up" was futile. I asked you not to print another long rant or tirade and that's exactly what you did with your long post on the media and government. If you are incapable of clearly stating your obvious hatred of the U.S. at least maybe you should admit that you certainly attack it at every opportunity.
Well, billjayman, just because it is a popular news network does not mean its news is worth reading/seeing/hearing.
Daily Sun? Lampu Hijau/Merah? Telegraaf?
All very popular papers, but to say they bring unbiased or important news? Not reallly...
Same with Fox...
Just because it is popular, does not mean it is good.
The fact that it is so popular, tells us more about the IQ of the average US citizen, than about the quality of the network.
As for "liberal left"...don't you think that is a bit of a contradictio in terminus?
Maybe not, anything is possible.
To the point...and I will explain this one more time.
Governments have been proven to sponsor groups of people, who are terrorists to one nation, but heroes to another.
And this switches from time to time.
Take Osama, big buddy of the US during Soviet-Afghanistan war, now an adversary.
Sponsored by? Yes, the US.
Now some police here are caught, red handed, sponsoring local terrorists.
The only explanation for that is, that those policemen feel that those people are fighting for a cause they believe is just.
Who you call terrorist, is called hero by another, and vice versa.
The US is called the big satan in a pretty big part of the world, as well.
Ah, the old you-hate-America, you're anti-American line. The knee jerk Fox news take on any opinion that goes against it's neo-con agenda. What is America? Who is it? You? You talk for them all do you?? Is it the 75% who were against the Iraq war? Or the majority who want the US to follow diplomatic channels via the UN on issues of national importance, that want the country to ratify Kyoto and follow the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court? All regular outcomes on opinion polls. I'm talking about it's government, ruling elites and doctrinal system and it's one party masquerading as a two party present. Not the only country like that for sure but, as the most powerful nation on earth, the ramifications of its actions beyond its borders are great.
This is also not a question of hatred, just objective reality. I just wish to bring up some points. You seem to be the one going all Bill O'Reilly postal. Your use of the terms 'liberal', 'conservative' and 'left' (whatever those terms mean any more in America) is very revealing though. It's the great myth of liberal bias in the media. In fact, in a well functioning propaganda system, there should appear to be a liberal bias in comparison with government policy. This will create the illusion that the media is doing a tenacious job and further serves to bound political debate within narrow limits, it says "This is the limit of debate, thus far and no further". Thus anything that reflects anything outside this narrow spectrum is marginalized or more frequently completely ignored.
In a dictatorship, it doesn't much matter what people think because there's a bludgeon over their heads. Once the state loses the bludgeon though, as in modern so called democracies, you have to control what people think. The media are owned by rich corporations, the government represent the elite, rich ruling class and this minority of the opulent have to be protected from the majority, i.e. those on top unsurprisingly set policies that serve their own interests. In more honest days the myths created were called propaganda. This is not some kind of "conspiracy theory" either. It's just the way society and its institutions work. People are selected for obedience from day one at school and those in charge believe the myths more than anyone else otherwise they simply wouldn't be in those positions. This public relations industry approach to mass communication sprung up to smash American labour in the 20's and has grown ever since. Hitler was a fan and modelled his own Third Reich propaganda on such myths. Try Googling "The Mohawk Valley Formula". In fact the PR industry manage all political campaigns these days, the same people that sell you toothpaste basically.
Simon P... I will explain this one more time. You continue to miss the point of each of my posts here on this subject. Truly an amazing feat by a supposed educated professional.
My blogs have nothing to do with what the west has done or not done. I never mentioned anything about the west or east. This has had nothing to do with my posts.
The point is....
You have leaped at every opportunity to slam the west because of some bitter hatred you have for the states. Period. You hate America and you ignore what other countries have done and only focus on the west. Again, here was a local article by a local paper on a local issue handled by local officials and you take a dig at the west.
Please refrain from another long tirade of all the horrible things you believe the west has done and just admit you hate America. At the same time you should "man up" and admit you take aim at the west at every opportunity as you have done here. No need for some long rambling of how horrible America is and just admit my point is correct.
@landreaumax... I never said Fox News was objective. Quite the fact is they are conservative. That is why they are the highest rated news organization in America. For years CNN and the network newscasts have slanted liberal left while the general public has always leaned conservative. Just because a news organization leans left or right does not mean they are "wrong"... it is just an alternative voice that has points to be made and is deserving to be heard. Apparently, they are doing something right as the ratings show them clearly crushing all other cable news networks combined.
Corruption in Indonesia is allowing Islamist militants access to weapons and falsified documents, according to a report released on Tuesday.
Some of Southeast Asia’s most notorious jihadist networks have used Indonesia as a base to plan and execute deadly bomb attacks on targets seen as un-Islamic.
Police have arrested scores of militants in a series of recent raids in Aceh province, North Sumatra, and killed several more in operations on the outskirts of Jakarta.
The raids uncovered a new stream of militants training in Aceh, where they planned assassinations on targets seen as un-Islamic — including officials from Indonesia’s secular government and Western NGOs.
The recent arrests have also revealed how corrupt police officials helped jihadists acquire weapons, according to the report, released by the Brussels-based International Crisis Group.
“Corruption continues to be a major lubricant for terrorist activities in Indonesia,” said the report, titled Jihadi Surprise in Aceh.
The report details how one militant linked to the Aceh group, a policeman named Mohhamed Sofyan Tsauri, was able to buy weapons from an official called Trisno in the logistics department of the Indonesian police headquarters.
Tsauri also arranged shooting practice for militants inside the headquarters of Brimob, Indonesia’s paramilitary police, on the outskirts of Jakarta.
Tsauri, who owned a vast collection of jihadi literature, was arrested in early March.
The report also said Dulmatin, a top bomb-maker with a $10 million bounty on his head and who was killed by police this year, obtained a passport under a fake name from the East Jakarta immigration office.
The report said corruption probably helped jailed militants operate from their prison cells.
“Payments to prison guards undoubtedly facilitated smuggling in mobile phones and other means of communication,” the report found.
The report recommended the Indonesian government tighten monitoring of jihadist prisoners and ex-prisoners, consider a ban on paramilitary training by non-state actors and train police on how to capture armed militants alive.
More should also be done to tackle document forgery, the report also found.
“The forgers themselves, not just the users of fake documents, should be tracked down and prosecuted,” the report said. “There are whole syndicates operating in Jakarta with ties to government departments, and putting them out of business would help address more crimes than terrorism.”
