Jakarta. East Java Police have deployed more than 100 officers to the area surrounding the Mount Bromo volcano in Probolinggo in anticipation of an eruption.

On Tuesday, Bromo’s status was raised to “beware,” the highest alert level before an eruption, and a three-kilometer exclusion zone imposed around the volcano.

“The military and the police are ready. Our troops are constantly monitoring the situation,” East Java Police Chief Insp. Gen. Badrodin Haiti told Metro TV on Thursday. “Evacuation tents are ready should people decide to leave their homes,” he said.

Bromo’s activities have not affected flights to and from Abdul Rahman Saleh Airport in Malang, East Java.

Surono, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), said on Wednesday that Bromo was still spewing smoke 200 meters into the air.

He said that even though activity at Bromo remained high, the danger level was much lower than that of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta, which has erupted repeatedly since Oct. 26 and killed about 375 people.

“Don’t compare the two. Merapi is a lot more dangerous than Bromo,” he said.

The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in Probolinggo expressed readiness to establish command posts five to seven kilometers from Mount Bromo on Thursday.
