Jakarta Police have arrested a masseuse for allegedly choking her teenage brother to death after he insulted her over a pair of socks.

South Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Imam Sugianto said on Thursday that the incident took place on Monday night and the suspect was arrested on Tuesday.

The suspect, 20-year-old Vivi Novita Elvia, had returned from work to her grandmother’s home in Kebayoran Baru at about 8 p.m. on Monday, Imam said.

“She had several shopping items with her, including a pair of new socks,” he said.

He said Vivi’s younger brother, Refly Naldo, 13, asked to wear the new socks while playing futsal but that Vivi refused, saying she bought them for her work.

“That’s when the brother became very abusive, calling his sister ‘pig’ and ‘dog’ and all kinds of insulting things that a boy his age shouldn’t be saying,” Imam said.

He said Refly kept insulting Vivi after she went up to her room on the second floor. Later, at about 11:30 p.m., Vivi snuck into her brother’s room and saw him lying on his front while listening to music from his cellphone.

“She then sat on his back and choked him from behind,” Imam said. “She choked him for about 30 minutes until he died.”

He added that after checking to see that her brother was dead, Vivi went back to her own room to send a text message to a colleague, saying she could not go to work the next day because of a cousin’s funeral.

The next morning, she left home at 6 a.m. and told her grandmother she was going to work. But Imam said she went to her boyfriend’s house in Sunter, North Jakarta, instead, and that nobody realized anything was wrong until Refly’s uncle went to wake him at 11 a.m.

“When he turned him [Refly] over, he saw that the boy wasn’t breathing, had bruises around his neck and had ants crawling out of his mouth,” Imam said.

The family immediately called the police as well as Vivi, who then “returned to the house and even started crying,” Imam said.

After questioning her, police grew suspicious of her behavior and arrested her. Imam said there was sufficient evidence to believe she was the murderer.

He said she would be charged with murder under the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.
