Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. An Indonesian citizen has been arrested after stabbing a Malaysian police officer during a raid on a cock fight in that country’s part of Sebatik Island, Borneo, last month.

“The stabbing was on Dec. 27, when Sebatik people were gambling on a cock fight,” Sr. Comr. Antonius Wisnu Sutirta, East Kalimantan Police spokesman, said on Tuesday.

“Malaysian police raided the cock fight and chased the [participants], and pointed their guns at them. Suddenly, the perpetrator stabbed [a police officer] and wounded the left rib of the victim.”

The suspect, identified as M.A., 56, ran across the border to Indonesia after the stabbing. He was arrested shortly afterward by Indonesian police.

Sebatik island, located off the eastern coast of Borneo, is divided between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Cock fights, known locally as sabung ayam, are a common event on the island, and popular among gamblers.

Antonius said that Indonesians living on Sebatik often crossed the lightly policed border in order to gamble on cock fights.

“This is their way to cheat the police by attending cock fights in Malaysia,” he said.

Antonius said that Indonesian authorities would be cooperating with their Malaysian counterparts in order to prevent future cross-border crimes.

The stabbed Malaysian officer, Ahmad Maliki, is recuperating at Tawau hospital in Malaysia. Indonesian Police say they will summon him as a witness when the case goes to court.
