Jakarta. Police in Depok are detaining a maid they believe fabricated a story of rape in order to cover up the fact that she had stolen from her employer.

The woman, identified as 38-year-old Satiyah, reportedly made up the bogus story to avoid being arrested by police for theft of gold jewelry and a mobile phone from the residence she worked at.

Beji Police subprecinct chief Adj. Comr. Ngadi said that Satiyah had continually altered her story right from the start.

“We finally had to write up two separate dossiers because she continued to change her story,” Ngadi said on Sunday, adding that she had been named a suspect for allegedly stealing 25 grams of gold and a mobile phone belonging to her employers, Yanto and Herlina.

Ngadi said the theft occurred at 10 a.m. on Dec. 1, while Yanto was at work and Herlina was on her way to pick up her child from school.

“At 2 a.m., Herlina returned home to find her helper, Satiyah, lying unconscious on the ground. She was, according to Herlina, lying half-naked,” Ngadi said.

“When she regained consciousness, Satiyah told Herlina that a couple of visitors had done this to her.”

Ngadi said Satiyah told Herlina that a man dressed in traditional Muslim clothes together with a woman in an Islamic headscarf, neither of whom she recognized, had come to the house earlier.

“She said that after the woman gagged and drugged her, the man had raped her,” Ngadi said.

“She was found with her underwear around her ankles and some fluid on her legs. She claimed it was the rapist’s sperm.

“However, when we checked [at the hospital] it was just some thickened sugary paste which we believe Satiyah applied to trick her employees,” Ngadi said.

Ngadi said Satiyah’s story continually changed under repeated questioning.

“We cross-examined her again and again. Finally she admitted her guilt,” Ngadi said.

“We found the gold in her powder box and the phone was actually in her room.

“We urge all employers to fully check all references before they take on maids for work,” Ngadi said.
