Both governments should severely punish those who knowingly tricked her (and her employer)and took the blood money.

@Valkyrie

"Just tell me what the Singapore Immigration should have done then?"

Ummm...question why and who would be sending a mentally deficient young Indonesian girl to take up employment in Singapore?

Valkyrie, if she is a university educated, so called "emancipated" women which have very high pride and self confidence, I bet she will pursue all of her right to the dot of "i" and the cross of that "t" with any means necessary. But we are talking about an uneducated young girl, alone far from home, for the first time in a foreign country, being constantly verbally abused by a stranger who she feels have a very stong power over her. I dont think "stupid" is all there is, it must be just a small sample of what she had been through. 24 hour, at least 5 days a week constant barrage of verbal abuse Valkyrie, try putting your self in that situation first, then comment.

jpb...

As usual, you are ignorant of the situation and begin to spout rubbish.

One - She's allowed by law, to have a weekend free

Two - She has been briefed to report any grievances to the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore

Three - She may even convey a report to any Police Post. There's always a Police Post in EVERTY HDB Housing complex

Four - She has the preorgative to report her dissatisfaction to the maid agency and request for a change of employers. In this direction she can only make three changes.

Would you like to compare these privileges for local maids?

One last thing. The crime was premeditated.

Hey! I have compassion for her too!

ps

I believe, the Islamic Prophet was a little too late by a thousand odd years, with that instruction because the Bible contains many scriptures regarding wages of laborers. Here's one for you to check out...

"Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift, but as his due."

Romans: 4:4

Singapore. A teenage Indonesian maid is facing a long jail term after pleading guilty to hitting and strangling an 87-year-old Singaporean widow who called her stupid, a report said on Thursday.

Now 19, Vitria Depsi Wahyuno had lied about her age in 2009, saying she was 23 to meet the minimum age requirement, and landed a job in Singapore working for Sng Gek Wah, the Straits Times said.

Wahyuno, who had been working for only five days when the killing took place at her employer’s home in Farleigh Avenue in Serangoon Gardens estate, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to culpable homicide and prosecutors have asked for a 20-year-jail term.

The defence, pleading for leniency, said Wahyuno was of low intelligence and could not cope with a demanding employer who called her hurtful names like “bodoh,” an Indonesian and Malay word for “stupid.”

Neighbors told the Straits Times that Sng was a “fierce” woman who could often be heard scolding Wahyuno.

Other local papers said Sng had gone through seven maids, including Wahyuno, since 2003.

Sng’s daughter and granddaughter described her in a statement delivered in court as a strong, resourceful and meticulous woman who was kind-hearted but could be impatient at times, the Straits Times said.

The victim suffered fractured ribs, cuts and bruises after being hit with a vase and smothered with a pillow before her neck was squeezed, according to autopsy results.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Christina Koh asked the High Court to sentence Vitria, now 19 years old, to 20 years in jail as the offence was premeditated and the attack on Sng Gek Wah was brutal and savage.

She said that the maid had waited for the elderly woman to fall asleep before attacking her between 8pm and 3.15 a.m. on Nov. 25, 2009.

Vitria then pretended to run out to seek help and a taxi driver called the police. Her initial story was that Sng fell by herself but police investigations revealed that the maid had strangled the elderly woman with her hands.

Defense lawyer Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed argued that a jail term of between eight and 10 years was appropriate in light of his client’s young age and immaturity.

He also said that Vitria, who came here with a passport that identified her as Fitriah, has been found to have a below average IQ of 63 that made her unable to cope with the frequent nagging and scolding by Sng.

The lawyer said the young maid was from a remote village in East Java with a totally different lifestyle from here and she never got the chance to adjust to the environment here.

Justice Choo Han Teck will sentence her on March 7.

More than 200,000 maids, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work in wealthy Singapore.
