A domestic helper from Surabaya who may have been abused by her
employers is now in stable condition after she was found unconscious in
her workplace in Malaysia, a government official said on Wednesday.
Muntik
Hani, 39, was taken to Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang Selangor , some
50 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, after a neighbor tipped off the
police.
Sumardoko, a spokesman for the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration, said Muntik was slowly regaining consciousness.
“Muntik
is now in stable condition, although she has bruises on her face and
wrist. She also has a broken back and can’t move her legs,” Sumardoko
said.
Widyarka Ryananta, the press attache at the Indonesian
Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, said Muntik was working in the country without
proper employment documents.
“She has worked here for two
months and she has no immigration documents,” he said. “She was sent
here by an unauthorized placement agency.”
Muntik worked for a woman identified as Wanitsi and her husband, whose name officials did not release.
Malaysian authorities raided the family’s home on Tuesday and detained Wanitsi. Her husband is still at large.
The Indonesian Embassy said it would provide Muntik with all the assistance she required.
Meanwhile,
a local labor rights watchdog criticized the Indonesian government for
what it described as its lack of commitment to protecting the rights of
domestic helpers employed in Malaysia.
Wahyu Susilo, a public
policy analyst at Migrant Care, cited the recent case of Siti Hajar, an
Indonesian domestic helper who was savagely abused by her Malaysian
employer.
The government followed up on Siti’s case and
temporarily banned domestic helpers, as well as construction and
plantation workers, from heading to Malaysia in search of employment.
Wahyu
said a 2006 memorandum of understanding between the two governments to
improve working conditions for Indonesians in Malaysia was still under
review.
“The government should bring the talks to an immediate conclusion, with an emphasis on protection for migrant workers,” he said.
