Global cooperation is needed to combat illegal fishing, said Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Freddy Numberi at a seminar Sunday in Manado, North Sulawesi.

"We find countries that say they're against illegal fishing but still in fact buy fish from illegal operations from other countries. This is why actions against illegal fishing have to be done hand in hand internationally," Numberi said.

Numberi said a quarter of the world's marine products come from illegal fishing, and that its economic impacts are felt most by developing countries like Indonesia.

A recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization found it cost Indonesia some US$ 3 billion per year.

"It is important to share the progress of different countries in combating illegal fishing," Numberi said. "The sharing of lessons is a starting point in intensifying actions to minimize illegal fishing."

He said Indonesia had experimented with giving out free vessel monitoring systems to companies to help them trace their catches.

The seminar was part of Sail Bunaken 2009, an international maritime festival running in North Sulawesi from August 12 to 20.
