Maybe they're planning to send them off to an island with the Ahmadiyah?

This lady, ready for work with very big hair and bejewelled, needs to get real. Agree with mauriceg totally. Numbers and dates plucked out of thin air. If one cares about street children, the last people you do a deal with is the police; let us not forget the kids playing some one dime game at the airport, that they tossed into a prison, abused and tortured.

A Prime Minister overseas once won an election of a promise - 'By (a certain year) there will be no child in this country living in poverty.' Everyone jumped up and applauded and felt good about themselves. What a caring community we are! He won the election. There are still plenty of kids living in poverty in that country. His programes and policies came to nothing and are forgotten.

They didn't have the political will or intention to do anything about itif it affected too many people's hip pockets. But it won them an election because it made the electorate feel good about themselves.

While Indonesia remains 'feudal' in its self understanding and outlook, I doubt whether anything much can change here - because people instinctively believe that some people are naturally superior to others. Only if that attitude changes will there be a serious attempt to eradicate poverty, ignorance and corruption in Indonesia.

Whenever I see a comment by an Indonesian minister that he/she is 'confident that 'abc problem will be solved by 'year 20xx'', is a sure sign that no one in the government knows much about it or gives a damn. Public distractions are daily occurrences and memories are short. Of course, with the resources and intelligence of the National Police at her disposal, what could be easier. I'd love this particular one to be different.

Jakarta. Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Linda Amalia Sari said on Tuesday that she was optimistic Indonesia would no longer have children living on the streets by 2014.

Linda made the comment after attending a ceremony marking an agreement between seven government ministries and the National Police to improve street children's welfare.

Linda said freeing Indonesia's 230,000 street children from poverty was not an easy task but by reimplementing certain strategic programs she was optimistic it could be accomplished.

Furthermore, she said, her ministry would intensively cooperate with other related ministries and non-governmental organizations in implementing the programs to tackle the problem of children living on the streets.

"My ministry will make the public aware of and promote children's rights, and encourage the public to play an active role in the care of children," Linda said.
