The President spends his life making insane comments. Whats so special about this one?

A Golkar Party legislator has criticized President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for using the term “insane” to describe speculation that his meeting with former Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati was related to the Bank Century scandal.

“As a head of state, [Yudhoyono] shouldn’t have to responded to such things, moreover accusing his people of being insane,” Bambang Soesatyo, a member of the House of Representatives’ Bank Century oversight team, told Metro TV on Thursday.

The outspoken legislator suggested instead that Yudhoyono focus on resolving the Bank Century scandal.

Golkar, headed by Aburizal Bakrie, has been at the forefront of efforts to bring charges against government officials involved in approving the government bailout of the ailing bank, since renamed Bank Mutiara.

The murky scandal is widely believed to have cost Sri Mulyani, a respected technocrat who at the time was spearheading efforts to reform the ministry and Directorate General of Taxation, her job in Yudhoyono’s government.

During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Yudhoyono addressed media reports about the meeting with Sri Mulyani, who now holds a senior position at the World Bank, at the State Palace on Tuesday.

“I heard that a television report mentioned that the meeting was related to the Century conspiracy. In my opinion, somebody is insane [for making the assumption],” Yudhoyono said.

Yudhoyono, who has been accused to having a thin skin when it comes to criticism, said the meeting was a part of his official duties.

“When [Sri Mulyani], an international official, paid a visit [to the president], the unclear agenda was instantly alleged to be part of the Century conspiracy. Again, this is insane,” he reiterated.

“Uphold the law but don’t mix legal affairs with political affairs. I encourage the law enforcement agencies, the Attorney General’s Office, the National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK], to do their work,” Yudhoyono said.

He also said that he received similar accusation related to the Lapindo mud flow case, widely blamed on a company owned by the Bakrie family.

“When I attended Golkar’s anniversary, it was alleged to be a Lapindo conspiracy. This was also insane. I, the president, always answer the invitations of coalition parties,” he said.
