Indonesia was not short on sensational news and gripping stories this year, but the topic that was most searched for in 2011 was neither the flight and capture of graft suspect Muhammad Nazaruddin nor the revival in the national football team’s fortunes.

It was Kate Middleton, according to Internet search giant Yahoo! Indonesia in its 2011 Year in Review report.

Other prominent figures and events abroad also had Indonesians’ curiosity piqued, including the Japanese tsunami, Steve Jobs and Muammar Khadafi, which all made the top 10 list.

The highest-ranked search of a local nature was for singer and regular gossip mill fodder Syahrini, at number three. Inong Malinda Dee, the alleged Citibank embezzler, and Norman Kamaru, the former Mobile Brigade officer turned lip-syncing sensation, were the only other specifically Indonesian search topics in the country’s overall top 10.

Malinda was also the most searched person in the top 10 national news topics, while Nazaruddin came in fourth. Interestingly, the national school exams came in fifth, likely indicating a high proportion of school-aged children among those Indonesians with access to the Internet.

The top 10 list of most searched-for gadgets was, predictably, topped by the BlackBerry smartphone, the device of choice for the country’s burgeoning middle class. Three BlackBerry phones and the BlackBerry tablet, the Playbook, made the top 10, while Apple’s iPad and iPhone came in second and sixth.

Worldwide, though, the iPhone was the most popular search query on Yahoo.

“The iPhone transcended gadget status,” Vera Chan, a senior editor and Web trend analyst at Yahoo!, said in a press release issued on Thursday.

“The device helped facilitate political movements around the world, and embodied the vision of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Fueled by news that he had stepped down as CEO in August, and then that he had passed away in October, searches for Steve Jobs skyrocketed on Yahoo!.”
