More than four years after an Indonesian migrant worker was crushed to death under a tractor in Malaysia, his parents finally received the payout on his life insurance policy on Tuesday.

Bonari, who was from Kambeng village in Ponorogo, East Java, was crushed by a tractor while working at the SOP palm oil plantation in the Malaysian province of Sarawak in April 2005. He was 25 years old.

Teguh Wardoyo, the director for the protection of Indonesian citizens overseas at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presented Bonari’s parents, Misni and Daimah, Rp 43.7 million ($4,600) at the ministry on Tuesday.

“[Processing the insurance claim] required a lengthy process, including the renewal of Misni and Daimah’s identity cards to enable them to claim the insurance money,” Teguh said.

As next of kin, half of the money was handed to Bonari’s father, Misni, while the other half was given to his mother, Daimah.

“Please use the money wisely to support your lives and to be independent,” Teguh said, adding that he fully understood that no amount of money could ever fully compensate for the loss of their son.

According to his parents, Bonari, the eldest of five children, had worked in Malaysia for about a year at the time of his death.

Hanifa, the Kambeng village chief who accompanied Misni and Daimah on the 19-hour trip to Jakarta, said Bonari, a junior high school graduate, was buried in the village, his remains being repatriated within a week of his death.

Both parents said that Bonari’s death would in no way deter them from sending any of their other children to Malaysia, should they wish to work there.

“Accidents happen anywhere. It’s a matter of fate,” Misni said.
