As always, there are two sides of the coin. If you really want to encourage people to smoke in designated areas, make them at least half decent.I always try to smoke in these areas, but they are often disgusting, hot, no airflow, no ashtrays (it's a smoking area right?), hard to find (no signs), wet when raining and too far away. Whilst it is laudable to protect the health of non-smokers, give dignity to smokers, they are not criminals.

I whole-heartedly welcome this policy.

One of my colleagues, he's foreigner, he went to Jakarta for business trip, and after he came back he complained how awful it was when entering the office's building. "The carpet even smells like smokes, I felt like walking into a nest of diseases." as I may quote (true story)

I know it will be difficult to apply this policy, because I believe millions of people will against it. I know how strong cigarettes can make people so dependable to smoking habit.

But please smoke wisely. Smoke in smoking area, and stay away from public area, avoid indoor smoking...that is like keeping a cat & the litter box inside a high-rise apartment.

There was one case last year, abt a girl who died of lung cancer because of second-hand smoking

We don't want it to be repeated, do we?

Good move. Smoking in public is harmful to others and should be totally banned. I'm sure as hell I couldn't sit in a restaurant spraying fly spray about at random mosquitos. Cigarette smoke is just as toxic, and all you smokers who spew out tar and chemicals and sit there saying it's an infringement on your rights are welcome to poison other consenting members of the public. But if one more person blows smoke my way while I'm pregnant and my son is asthmatic, I will probably use the fire extiguisher on them. It's just revolting and the height of selfishness.

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo is set to introduce tough new regulations in its ongoing fight against smoking in the capital.

The announcement comes just two years after Fauzi first introduced measures to limit smoking.

The new governor decree will include sanctions against city employees who fail to implement the regulations, BeritaJakarta reported.

The regulations, which will apply from low-level to senior officials, range from demotion to being fired, the city’s official news portal said.

Public officials who also fail to respond to public complaints can also be sanctioned.

City consultant Dollaris Riauaty Suhadi said the decree would be a tough new tool against smoking.

BeritaJakarta said it was estimated that 62 percent of the city’s 55,000 buildings regulated smoking indoors.
