looking at the picture on the front page I was expecting tonnes ... not 55 kilograms of methamphetamine, 50,000 ecstasy pills and 30,000 ‘Happy5’ pills....

If the amount involved was really Rp128 billion, I would think that would currently equate to approximately US$14.3 million, not US$14.3 billion!

No doubt the police in Aceh 'inspected' and 'certified' the goods before they were allowed to travel to Jakarta.

Jakarta Police have uncovered an operation to distribute Rp 128 billion ($14.3 million) worth of narcotics controlled by three Malaysian nationals, known by their initials as A.Z.L., A.D. and A.P.N.

“The Malaysian citizens were the financiers and have smuggled in 55 kilograms of methamphetamine, 50,000 ecstasy pills and 30,000 ‘Happy5’ pills,” Jakarta Police spokesman Rikwanto said on Thursday.

He said police had also arrested other suspects in connection with the drug ring, including five inmates of the Salemba and Tangerang state penitentiaries.

Rikwanto said police arrested some of the suspects in front of the Plaza Hotel in the Harco Mas shopping complex in Mangga Dua, Central Jakarta, and others in Ancol on Jan. 26.

The director of narcotics at the Jakarta Police, Sr. Comms. Nugroho Aji, said that the inmates of the Salemba and Tangerang penitentiaries had also acted as controllers and financiers.

He said the suspects smuggled drugs from the Netherlands, Iran and China through Johor in Malaysia to Indonesia.

They rented a small wooden boat to transport the drugs from Johor to Aceh in Sumatra, where the drugs would then be taken by land to Jakarta through Padang, Palembang, Jambi and Lampung.

“The police arrested them with all the evidence after following them for almost two months,” he said.

He said they planned to distribute the drugs in night spots in big cities like Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung.

The suspects are facing drug charges carrying the maximum penalty of death.
