"Other improvements include an automated transportation system linking the terminals as well as a shopping mall and a hotel". You can't part South-East Asians with their malls can you? A dedicated road and/or rail link to/from the airport like KLIA in Malaysia should be in the agenda.

I don't think the airport is in that much of a bad way. Sure it looks a little tatty but I don't have many issues when I travel. If you want the airport to work better then you need to have a rail system linking Jakarta to the terminals. This would cut down the traffic at the airport fix 50% of the problem. A couple of licks of paint, a few additional gates and bobs your uncle we have a great airport. @ jchay - you really want to complain about Rp.4.000 parking? Try going to london where an hour costs close to Rp.150.000! @ Zerodiversity - its customs and immigration officials job to be obnoxious. Try Sydney Airport if you want to see an example of how bad customs and immigration people can be!

I will land in Soekarno-Hatta in the evening of September 6th coming from Francfort Airport... after a first flight from Bâle-Mulhouse to Francfort... I see some of Soekarno-Hatta on Youtube... not bad for my very first travel by plane... people will be waiting for me and then take me to Bogor... and then holidays for a little bit over two weeks...

@jchay...Singapore the fastest exit out of the airport...I don't think so. As frequent traveler to Jakarta. From leaving the aircraft, I would say 35 minutes top out the exit arrival door (including passport control, luggage) and into a cab. Singapore more or less the same.

With $1.37b, I should expect:

1. A world class toilet in Soekarno Hatta!!! Please!

2. to "fix" whatever is holding the luggages! Time to wait for luggages seems to take longer and forever. In Singapore/Changi usually from stepping-out of plane to sitting inside taxi (including immigration and luggage) takes about 15mins, in Jakarta is 1.5 hours minimum!

3. to eliminate the "preman" parking and trolley attendants. We pay Rp.4,000 for parking that we don't even feel safe in the parking lot.

We'll see how "overhaul" Rp 11.7 trillion ($1.37 billion) can do... or else, forget world class, there's simply no hope.

Jakarta’s substandard Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is to get a Rp 11.7 trillion ($1.37 billion) overhaul, the Ministry of Transportation said on Tuesday.

Herry Bhakti Gumay, director general of aviation transportation at ministry, was quoted by Detik.com as saying the revamp would be entirely funded by State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II.

“Construction will start in 2012 and in 2014, Soekarno-Hatta will become a world-class airport,” Herry told the news portal.

Changes included completing development of Terminal 3 by 2013, renovating terminals one and two, building a new cargo terminal by 2013.

Other improvements include an automated transportation system linking the terminals as well as a shopping mall and a hotel.

Herry acknowledged that Soekarno-Hatta was now incapable of coping with the number of passengers, which continue to grow.

“Currently the airport’s capacity is designed for 22 million passengers [annually] but in reality, the number of passengers has grown to 44 million,” Herry said.

The plan to redevelop the airport was first announced by Vice President Boediono in May.

Vice Presidential Spokesman Boediono’s said it was hoped that the number of passengers would increase to 62 million people by 2014.

“That will mean increasing the apron capacity from the current 125 aircraft to 174 aircraft.”
