KPAI to House: Youth Need Separate Jails

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission told the House of Representatives on Tuesday that there should be special detention centers and correctional facilities for underage offenders.

The need for such new facilities should be stipulated in the amendment of the law on juvenile justice currently being deliberated by lawmakers, Apong Herlina, head of the commission known as the KPAI, told the House legal affairs commission

Two teenage brothers died in police custody in Sijunjung, West Sumatra, in December, highlighting the need for young offenders to be treated differently than adults. Police insist that the boys committed suicide.
