The 13-year-old student in Depok accused of stabbing a classmate over a stolen mobile phone must be treated with special care by the police, the deputy head of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission has said.

The student, identified only as A., is in police custody after being arrested for stabbing a classmate, S.M., 12, with a 30-centimeter kitchen knife. The victim survived the attack.

A. reportedly stabbed the victim after S.M. had reported him to school authorities for stealing a mobile phone belonging to S.M.’s parents.

Asrorun Niam Sholeh, from the child protection agency known as the KPAI, said while A. was accused of a serious crime, he should be treated with care.

“This case must be handled in the context of prioritizing the child’s welfare, even though it is going to be dealt with according to the law,” Niam said on Sunday. “We ask the police to use their discretion and remember this.”

Niam said that if A. apologized to his victim and his family financially compensated S.M.’s family for medical bills and care, the police might consider prioritizing rehabilitation over punishment.

“The perpetrator must receive the message that what he did was against the law,” Niam said. “But taking responsibility could be in the form of an apology and the payment of the victim’s medical expenses.”
