Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission is investigating the involvement of businesswoman and socialite Nunun Nurbaeti Daradjatun in the bribery scandal surrounding the appointment of economist Miranda Goeltom as Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor.

The commission, also known as the KPK, on Wednesday named 26 former and current lawmakers as suspects in connection with the appointment of Miranda to Bank Indonesia.

The suspects allegedly accepted between Rp 250 million and Rp 1.45 billion ($28,000 and $160,000) in traveler's checks to vote for Miranda's appointment. Based on the results of KPK's initial investigation, the checks were from Nunun.

Nunun is married to politician Adang Daradjatun from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).

“She will just wait and see, there's nothing else she can do,” Adang was quoted by online news portal Kompas.com as saying. “Especially with her strange illness, I don't have the heart to discuss the case with her.”

Nunun is currently in Singapore and has ignored repeated summons from the KPK, claiming that she is suffering from a mysterious illness that causes memory loss.

Adnan Topan Husodo, deputy chairman of the non-profit organization Indonesia Corruption Watch, said that Nunun was key to unraveling who provided money for the bribes.

“We think that she acted as an intermediary because she doesn’t have any businesses linked to the banking world,” Adnan told the Jakarta Globe.

“She would certainly make the ideal middleman. She knows Miranda personally. She has access to lawmakers. She is also in the palm oil business.”
