Alright KPK! Now let's see how the story progresses.

Antigraft investigators have confirmed they are following up on the legislative speaker’s report on costly projects at the House of Representatives building and have sought access to probe the House Secretariat.

Bambang Widjojanto, a deputy chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), said on Friday that his office was looking into the report filed by House Speaker Marzuki Alie, which detailed a list of projects carried out at the House since 2010.

“If you read the report, you’ll notice that most of those projects are linked to the House Budget Committee,” Bambang said.

He added that to confirm any allegations of graft in these projects, the KPK would need access to officials and data from the House Secretariat, which oversees the administration and funding of all renovation and acquisition projects at the House.

Bambang said the KPK was now filing a formal request to the House to gain access to the Secretariat, but added that the antigraft agency has no plans in the near future to question any officials from the Budget Committee in the matter.

The committee, and the House in general, drew widespread public scorn when it was revealed earlier this month that Rp 20 billion ($2.2 million) had been allocated to renovate a meeting room used by the committee.

In the ensuing public scrutiny, other controversial projects that came to light included the printing of about 18,000 calendars for Rp 1.3 billion and a planned restroom renovation with a budget of Rp 2 billion.

Marzuki, who also criticized the exorbitant spending, vowed last week to resign if it was found that he was involved in any of the projects.

When filing his report with the KPK last week, Marzuki told reporters that an audit of the meeting room renovation project was being carried out by the State Finance Development Comptroller (BPKP).

He was accompanied at the time by Nining Indra Saleh, the House secretary general, whom he previously said he was willing to fire over the controversy.

For its part, Nining’s office has fingered the Budget Committee as the offending party in the whole fiasco, pointing out that it was the one that had caused the budget to swell by ordering imported furniture such as German chairs that cost Rp 24 million each.

But the House Ethics Council insisted Nining was to blame.

Last week, she acknowledged that the secretariat had not fully informed all stakeholders concerned about all the projects.

“Some things haven’t been sufficiently communicated. But all plans, including their technical aspects, have been in line with existing laws,” she said.
