Road accidents over the 12 days up to Aug. 22 claimed 641 lives and caused material losses estimated at Rp 7.5 billion, police data showed on Thursday.
In the data from the police traffic corps included in the report of the Integrated 2012 Lebaran Transportation Coordinating Post submitted to the Transportation Minister on Thursday, a total of 3,587 road accidents were recorded in 12 of the normally 14-day period covering the annual exodus known as mudik.
Aside from the fatalities, 1,031 others were reported seriously injured and another 3,444 lightly injured.
The highest number of casualties were recorded on Monday, Aug. 13, which saw 74 people killed, causing losses estimated at Rp 1.01 billion.
Last year, the National Police recorded 4,006 accidents in the two weeks surrounding Idul Fitri. The number of accidents had increased by 33 percent from 2010’s figure of 3,010, but the number of fatalities decreased to 661, from 746 in 2010, according to the police.
