Malaysia Moves Closer to Building a 'Green' City
Malaysia has moved closer to building a 'carbon-neutral city' after a government-owned development firm signed an agreement with a United Arab Emirates company that specializes in green cities.
1Malaysia inked the deal with the UAE's Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, on Sunday evening, according to the Star Online newspaper website.
Masdar has begun construction on a project called Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. According to the company's website, the city will run on renewable energy and neutralize all its waste through composting, waste-to-energy treatment or recycling. The first building is set to open this year.
“It is our intent to explore and evaluate business opportunities relating to the development of an environmentally friendly carbon-neutral city in Malaysia,” Malaysia Development chief executive officer Shahrol Halmi said in a statement.
