A Malaysian man escaped the death penalty for attempted drug smuggling when he was sentenced in an Indonesian court.

Cow Kit Nang, 50, from Selangor, was jailed for life by the Mataram District Court in West Nusa Tenggara, for attempting to smuggle 3.2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine into the country, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement released on Wednesday.

The sentence matched the prosecution’s demands though Nang escaped the more serious charge of illicit trade of the drug that carried the death penalty.

The defendant had acted for a courier, identified only as Mike, who remains at large, on three separate occasions, smuggling drugs into three different countries for 7,000 Malaysian ringgits (Rp 19.6 million).

Nang said he accepted the job because he needed money to pay for the education of his children.

The verdict was delivered on Monday.
