DD, I'm absolutely with u on education. There is no doubt education is the slowest yet the most effective way to go about any human problems. And agree with u on the current shaky application of the law, it may open up an opportunity for abuse as in any other sentences. In the coming weeks, I fear we will hear more rape cases, and some will include "body found".

If anybody else can think of suggestions of other practical deterrents, other than basically saying "that won't work nonredneck". I admit, I can't think of anything else. Please share.

Nrn

as you know it would be abused and misused and be totally cash related in its application... making it a non starter in my book.

The law exists to imprison these people but it is not used - the castration model would follow the same route

Education is the key - and even that will be undermined by Islamic principles here ... screwed one feels

@trueblue Yes I stand firm by my opinion, despite ur objections. I care for the women trying to go on about minding their own life. 1-on-1 fight without weapon these women can return the aggression herself. BUT NO!! in each of these cases these 3-5 cowardly scums of society must gang-up on one person. And u're trying so hard to portray me as barbaric? While these coward scums are put inside prison which they don't mind at all. And future rapist reading these news thinking: 'oh it's only prison.' The victims scarred mentally & physically for the rest of her life, the even more unfortunate ones are rotting in a shallow grave or sunk underwater, some found, some never found. And u complaint that I fuss about why prison sentence don't deter these people??? Don't give me the bs of "the police partol will surely prevent this from happening" Dream On! So lets hear ur suggestions? Got none?

I believe that what you have read about and is used in some Western jurisdictions is "chemical castration". This is in place in Australia, and the criminal has his libido zeroed. I know of no Western country that surgically performs the procedures you advocate, as part of their judicial process. I am curious if you could possibly identify such a country/state. Once identified (if at all) we can debate and examine the success of such barbarism.

Sorry but where is the journalism here? Was it rape or not? This story is very confusing and really only inflames us readers. Garbled garbage that makes no sense at all.

A man suspected of raping a nursing student in South Jakarta last week after beating her unconscious has been arrested, police said on Thursday.

“The suspect was arrested in Solo and is currently on his way to the South Jakarta Police headquarters,” said Adj. Comr. Helmy Santika of the Jakarta Police detectives unit.

He identified the suspect only as 23-year-old Su and said the man was the sole suspect.

The 18-year-old victim, a student at the Nursing Academy in Central Jakarta, has been identified only as J.M.

She was reportedly waiting for public transportation on the side of the road in Ciputat, South Jakarta, late on the night of Jan. 20 and became alarmed when a group of men nearby began harassing her.

J.M. ran away, but the men followed her down a railroad track. They caught her and knocked her unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, she realized that she had been raped.

Police have confirmed that the victim lost consciousness after being struck on the back of her head.

Meanwhile, in a separate but similar case, the head of the Bogor Police detectives unit, Adj. Comr. Imron Ermawan, said his men arrested M.D., 38, and a public transportation minivan (angkot) driver on Wednesday for attempted rape.

M.D., he said, is suspected of having molested a 15-year-old girl who got into his van on Tuesday evening around 8 p.m., planning to head home.

“The victim wanted to return to her home in Gunung Putri,” Imron said, adding that the driver halted the van halfway to its destination upon seeing that she was alone.

“The driver intended to rape the victim,” Imron said.

However, he continued, after finding out that the girl was in the middle of her period, the driver chose to molest her instead.

M.D. faces up to 15 years in jail for violating the 2002 law on the protection of children.

However, Soebiantoro, the head of the Bogor traffic office, claimed that the case was not of rape as both sides consented.

“The perpetrator and the victim actually were both willing,” he said.

The two cases are only the latest in a disturbing series of sexual assault cases that have recently targeted young women attempting to take Jakarta public transportation in the evening.

The last year has seen a string of incidents in which women have been raped, gang raped, robbed or killed by angkot drivers and passengers.

The pattern has prompted authorities to ban tinted window panes from angkots and ensure that all drivers wear uniforms and are properly licensed.

Jakarta Police have begun advising women to carry protective equipment such as pepper spray and electroshock devices if they plan to take public transportation, particularly after dark.
