Jakarta. A man was severely burned in Bekasi after a 12-kilogram gas cylinder exploded in front of him causing him to be hospitalized.

The victim, Gatot Sunyoto, was transferring gas from a three-kilogram cylinder to a 12-kilogram cylinder when it exploded.

The explosion badly damaged his and several neighbors' houses at Rawa Bogo village in Jati Mekar area, Bekasi.

A neighbor named Sarjono said he heard a hissing sound before the explosion.

“The back wall of my house collapsed and the rooftop was damaged,” Sarjono told news portal Tempointeraktif on Monday.

He said he saw Gatot run out of his house with his body on fire. Sarjono said the neighbors had been concerned because Gatot brought a car load of gas cylinders to his house every day.

The police found 26 three-kilogram gas cylinders and sixteen 12-kilogram gas cylinders in his house.

They also found 53 three-kilogram cylinders and fourteen 12-kilogram cylinders at the house of Gatot's business partner, Darsono, who lived next door.

Transferring the gas from the smaller cylinders to the 12-kilogram cylinders is lucrative as the 12-kilogram cylinders are not subsidized and can sell for more.

Police said that Gatot was conducting the gas-transfer process in his bathroom after they found a three-kilogram gas cylinder on top of the bath tub.

Another neighbor named Aan Rohayani said locals had been suspicious about Gatot's business and planned to report him to the police.

“We knew he made a living by doing illegal gas transfers but we kept waiting because we had not caught him in the act,” she said.
