Jakarta. A chemical factory warehouse in Kosambi, Tangerang exploded on Friday afternoon. Two people were reportedly injured and suffered from severe burns.
The explosion was followed by a massive fire engulfing the Mutiara warehouse area. Firefighters along with police officers reportedly struggled to contain the fire starting at 1:30 p.m., but some staff refused to leave the warehouses, trying to save merchandise from the flames as the fire raged overhead.
Second Brig. Yosef from Teluk Naga Police Station told Elshinta Radio that two injured victims were taken to Tangerang General Hospital. He asked locals not to come to the location because explosions were still being heard.
“We are trying to isolate the location and keep locals from approaching,” Yosef said.
A local named Subhan said people at the neighborhood were shocked and panicked upon hearing the explosion.
“My house is not far from the warehouse. I heard a loud bang and suddenly there was a fireball surging high into the sky,” Subhan was quoted by news portal Okezone.com as saying.
“The workers came running out of the factory in panic,” he said, adding that he thought there may be people trapped in the factory.
“There were people coming to the area, crying. They're trying to find their friends and family who worked at the factory,” he said.
