Jakarta. The weatherman will maximize the power of mobile technology to keep the public better informed amid a worsening rainy season.

Widada Sulistya, the public relations director for the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said that because of the intensity of the rain this year, the agency would more frequently update its account on Twitter, @infoBMKG.

“We’re going to provide information about weather predictions in big cities more often,” he said on Wednesday.

Widada said torrential downpours were expected across the country well into the weekend.

“The sun is directly above the Equator at this time of year and reaches its equinox on September 23,” he said.

He added this would lead to greater evaporation of seawater, which then became rain clouds.

“The kind of weather we had [on Wednesday] will continue for almost a week,” Widada said.

He also said the rain intensity would range from medium to heavy in the afternoon and at night, while in the daytime it would be lighter.

The BMKG reported the entire island of Java experienced rain on Wednesday, while in Sumatra, the affected provinces were Aceh, North Sumatra and Lampung.

In Jakarta, rains on Tuesday and Wednesday flooded several streets and underpasses, and caused heavy traffic congestion during the evening rush hour.

Rain-related traffic jams also hit Bandung, West Java.

Resident Karmida Risa told the Globe several streets in the city had flooded on Wednesday.

“Traffic on Jalan Dago and Jalan Merdeka was very heavy because of flooding,” she said.

State news agency Antara reported that the other main thoroughfares of Jalan Soekarno Hatta, Jalan Raya Kopo and Jalan Mohammad Toha were flooded in knee-deep water.

Some vehicles had stalled on Jalan Mohammad Toha, backing up traffic.

Last month, the BMKG said the country was experiencing its most extreme weather on record, including unusually heavy rain linked to La Nina, which is expected to persist until early 2011.
