Ten people, including five soldiers and one civil servant, have been detained following the December sinking of a boat overloaded with asylum seekers off the coast of East Java.

Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution, National Police spokesman, identified the military personnel by their initials.

“There are suspects from the military: K.A., K., S., K.N., I.A.S and one civil servant, B.S.,” Saud said. “They’re all being charged by the military criminal code for their involvement in crimes.

The soldiers are accused of helping the asylum seekers continue their journey by boat, but further details remain unclear. The soldiers are being detained by the East Java Military Police.

The boat, carrying around 250 asylum seekers from Middle Eastern countries, sank 74 kilometers off East Java’s Trenggalek district on Dec. 19 on its way to Australia’s Christmas island. Only 49 survivors were found.
