Though she had to cancel an appearance in a local horror flick amid official and public protests last year, Japanese sex star Miyabi and her films remain an object of desire, at least in the capital.

The Jakarta Police’s Industry and Trade Unit was surprised when vendors of pornographic VCDs nabbed by police in a recent raid in Glodok, West Jakarta, admitted that films featuring Miyabi topped their best-seller list.

“The ones most sought after are Miyabi’s VCDs,” a vendor named Dede Eko told reporters at Jakarta Police Headquarters on Thursday.

Dede was detained last week at his stall under a Glodok bridge shortly after he had opened up his business for the day.

He said he obtained the porn discs from a supplier, also in the Glodok area, each costing Rp 2,800 (30 cents). “I resell them for Rp 5,000,” he said.

According to Dede, he only sold porn VCDs to adults and never to underage buyers.

“A lot of high school students try to buy porn but I only sell my VCD’s to people above 20 years of age and most of them are men,” he said.

Apart from Dede, police also arrested a man identified as Yakob, who supplied pornographic VCDs to Dede and other vendors. Yakob told police interrogators that he could rake in Rp 800,000 to Rp 1 million per day. “I’d been in the business for 10 months” before the arrest, he said.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Police spokesman Chief Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said a total of four suspects were arrested. They were Yakob, Dede, and two other men identified by their initials, SR and EW.

Yakob and Dede have been charged under laws on pornography, Boy said.

Police confiscated 16,850 pirated VCDs, including pornographic films and two computers that were used to copy discs.
