Banda Aceh. Rudely awakened from their sleep, bleary-eyed locals on the
island of Simeulue in Aceh ran out of their homes early on Thursday
morning when a 5.9-magnitude earthquake shook the province.
No
fatalities or injuries were reported and the Geophysics, Climatology
and Meteorology Agency said that the quake, which occurred at 4:49 a.m.
during dawn prayers, did not trigger a tsunami.
“Every single
person in my house jumped out of their beds and headed outside. I was
carrying my three-year-old in my arms,” said Eva Susanti, 31, who lives
in the capital Sinabang.
“We were terrified and panicked when the quake hit. We were all still half asleep. My baby wouldn’t stop crying.”
The quake’s epicenter was located 90 kilometers northwest of Sinabang, and was about 10 kilometers deep.
Abdul
Karim, the Simeulue administration’s spokesman, said that up until
Thursday afternoon his office had not received any reports of
fatalities or damage.
“Locals were in a panic. They chose to
stay outside their homes till 6 a.m.,” Abdul said, adding that some
parents did not to send their children to school.
None of the locals, however, fled to higher ground, which is usual once a quake hits because of fears of an impending tsunami.
“They
only do that if there’s a second quake that happens to be bigger than
the first one. This time, there was no second quake,” Karim said.
This
was the fourth quake in Sumatra in three days. On Wednesday, a
5.4-magnitude quake shook Panyabungan in North Sumatra. On Tuesday, a
5.1 quake was felt in Gunung Sitoli, North Sumatra, at 5 a.m. and two
hours later another quake of the same magnitude shook Bintuhan in
Bengkulu.
