Most Support Caning of Women, Says Malaysian Official

Most Malaysians accept the caning of women under the country’s Shariah courts, Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director general Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz said on Wednesday.

“Jakim held a seminar to discuss caning long before it became an issue among Malaysians. The outcome was encouraging because the participants understood the whys and hows of it,” he said as quoted by newspaper Web site thestar.com.

“We are aware that some parties are still unable to accept the punishment but given time and more explanation, I believe they will come around.”

He added that Jakim was “willing to explain the issue all over again, to whoever needs an explanation.”

Malaysia’s Women’s Minister, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, said on Tuesday that she hoped to organize a conference with representatives of other Muslim-majority countries to discuss the punishment.

She told the Malaysia Insider website she respected the caning sentence recently doled out to three women, but she believed physical punishment was not the only option.

“Wrong is wrong, but there are many ways to handle the issue, including rehabilitation and counselling,” Shahrizat said.

The women were caned for having sex outside marriage. They have since publicly defended the punishment, saying it gave them a chance to repent.

Authorities used a light rattan stick to hit the women on their backs while they were fully clothed. The caning of men in Malaysia, by contrast, is done on bare skin and can cause bleeding and scarring.

Are you all aware that judicial caning, is also a form of corporal punishment in Singapore? If I'm not mistaken this punishment only applies to male criminals between the ages of 18-50.

In 1993, Michael P. Fay, an American, briefly shot to fame when he was jailed for 4 months, fined S$3,500 and received four strokes of the rotan, for theft and vandalism.

To date, this has worked well for Singapore.

Note: criminals undergo medical examinations to identify if they are medically fit to be caned. Medical officers are present whenever canings are performed.

Al Qaeda and Malaysia should work together to humiliate Muslims everywhere with their bigotry. Shame on you Malaysia! Shame on you!

Let us just hope that this kind of Sharia law never makes its way into Indonesian law - because here the general population consists of around 90 % Muslims and, same as LAYMAN mentioned in Malaysia, modern Islamic scholars are many times over-shouted by fundamentalist ones.

Ans Simon, YES, this assaults are an affront to humanity.

The word seems appropriate here: what a pig of a man.

Assaulting anyone, but most especially women, is an affront to humanity.

But, then, I guess this guy also thinks that horses flew once, no?

The report title and the Jakim DG's statement are misleading. The DG cannot say most Malaysians accept the caning of women under the country’s Shariah courts, because there are only 60% Malaysians who are Muslims. The other 40% don't care since they are not affected by this law. Even among Muslims, they may only 'accept' because it has already become law but to say 'support' the caning of women, some one better do a real survey. I can confidently say that only a small group supports this law. Furthermore, Malaysians have no way to vote out Syariah law makers as opposed to voting our parliamentarians. Syariah law makers are in a class and fraternity of their own. What Malaysia needs when it comes to so-called Islamic law is a total shake-up or shake-down of the system and its agencies. Malaysia actually has a number of progressive Islamic scholars but they are out-maneuvered by the dogmatic fundamentalists. So, to say most Malaysians 'support' the caning of women is misleading.

The whole system in Malaysia is based on double talk, double face, double standards and rampant hypocrisy. A corrupted entrenched system where lies and shameless moralization in the name of religion and traditions are taken to the maximum levels.

What a disgrace. Malaysia will suffer International embarrasment and condemnation in their attempt to justify such medieval deeds. Back to the dark ages we go - the world is flat isn't it ?

What about the men they had sex with - or do the same rules not apply to them.

Centuries ago the Jews put men and women to death for adultery and fornication. Jesus was confronted with a group of people intent on stoning to death a woman caught in the act of adultery. He said, "OK, go ahead. But make sure the person who throws the first stone is sinless himself." And one by one the crowd put their stones down and walked away. Jesus, a prophet revered by Muslims was showing his Jewish brothers and sisters that they had a limited understanding of God's mercy and love which is found in forgiveness rather than enforcing laws. Jesus is revered as a prophet by Muslims. Why don't they listen to him. Surely his words are still valid.

When the crowd had walked away Jesus turned to the woman and said, "Does no one condemn you? Neither do I. Go, and sin no more."
