Why hasn't the government learn from past statistics to create an improvement for road safety each year?? Bad infrastructures and low self discipline from the masses result in many accidents which it may actually be avoidable should the government is on track.

However, is it worth to ignore road safety measures on the road because ego fares higher to cause a deadly accident instead of procuring safety for one another.

How many motorcycle riders prosecuted for having more than 1 passenger (by law)?

These numbers are mind-boggling but actually, given the usual lack of discipline and knowledge of even basic traffic rule not surprising. I do believe that the actual numbers of dead and injured did not increase by 150% as claimed in comparison to last year, but that, as mentioned, the statistical numbers only increased due to a better monitoring system.

2,200 accidents so far...and counting! Of course Bambang Tjahyono is correct in his assumption that the majority of accidents are happening due to reckless driving, but it also in most cases completely mindless driving. Sad thing is just that not only the ones driving reck- and midless are in the list of victims, but that there is for sure a high number of innocent victims who are the victims of these reckless drivers Oh, how I hate them personally and still have to face them every week when driving Jalan Tol. At least they are getting this time of the year again sorted out a bit, giving space to "newcomers". I don't have too much pity for them but for the innocent victims who fell prey to these stupid drivers.

This year's mudik season has claimed 345 casualties so far, already a 140 percent increase from the same period last year, an official said on Tuesday.

Bambang Tjahyono, the Transportation Ministry official heading the department monitoring the annual migration, told news portal Detik.com that between Wednesday last week and Monday 345 people died from more than 2,200 accidents.

Over the same period last year, 144 casualties were recorded from 743 accidents.

Another 564 people suffered from heavy injuries over the same 6-day period this year, while 1,385 were registered for minor injuries.

Bambang blamed the accidents largely on "reckless driving," but he also said the increase in statistics was a result of a better monitoring system.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam has said some 15 million Indonesians are expected to travel to celebrate Idul Fitri in their hometowns this year.

“It is about a 4.14 percent increase from the 14 million people last year,” Anton said.
