The deputy director of the North Sumatra Police narcotics unit has been detained for drug dealing, the National Police headquarters said on Wednesday.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said here that the officer, Adj. Sr. Comr. A., was still being questioned by police internal affairs.

He said that last Tuesday, North Sumatra Police had raided a nightclub in Medan.

“When they searched a nightclub in Medan, they found a visitor with many Happy-Five pills. After an interrogation, the visitor confessed that he brought the pills for Adj. Comr. A,” Saud said. “He said the officer wanted to give the pills away to his friends.”

Happy-Five pills are a type of benzodiazepine.

A. was arrested on Friday and dismissed from his position. Saud said A.’s misconduct was embarrassing.

“How can he do that?” the spokesman said. “He is an officer who is supposed to crack down on drug circulation.”

The two-star general said that if found guilty, A. would be sanctioned according to the law.

Civil society groups have long alleged that many police officers use and sell illicit drugs.
