Jakarta. National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri finally reappeared in public on Monday after three days of intense speculation as to his whereabouts.
Bambang, under intense pressure amid a series of scandals, including recent criticisms that police had lied about the existence of evidence indicating corruption within the respected Corruption Eradication Commission, turned up at a ceremony at National Police headquarters on Monday to install a number of senior officers.
The ceremony was expected to be held on Friday, but Bambang failed to appear without first notifying those in attendance.
Police then claimed Bambang had been summoned to meet President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono but the claims were denied by the Presidential Palace.
Police later claimed that Bambang had to attend a “task” but would not provide details.
On Monday, a police spokesman said the police chief had been sick.
