Nusa Dua, Bali. The head of the Anti-Terrorism Agency says there are no indications that terrorists were planning an attack in Indonesia to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Sunday.

Ansyaad Mbai, head of the agency known as the BNPT, said that security officials, however, remained on alert.

New York City is on high alert and President Barack Obama ordered boosted counterterrorism efforts after officials warned of the threat of a terror strike on the United States.

Ansyaad said there had been “no specific indications” of a terrorist attack in Indonesia.

“But I am not saying there is no possibility for it to happen. So we will always be alert,” he said.

He said he had received a number of questions from foreign journalists about the possibility of terrorist attacks ahead of the Sept. 11 attack.

To them he said terrorism in Indonesia was different to terrorism abroad, arguing that terrorists in Indonesia were not focused on the Sept. 11 event because “their characteristic is different.”

He said the ideology of international terrorists was influenced by the late Osama bin Laden while radical activities in Indonesia had been in existence before Osama bin Laden existed.

The comments appear to contradict comments the previous day, when he was quoted as saying that alleged Bali bomber Umar Umar Patek had planned a wave of terror attacks in Indonesia to coincide with the Sept. 11 anniversary.

He said the enemies of terrorists in Indonesia were not only western parties but also state apparatus and the government.

However “we remain alert to protect our interests, our people,” he said.
